Building a Theological Library

November 24th, 2008 | preacher | Uncategorized

Here is the link to Dr. Atkins’s list of the best book to have for a basic theological library.  With this list and the one in John MacArthur’s book, you should have a great resource for Christmas gifts.  Really, having list like this keep you from wasting money on books you will not need or use.

The Ramblings of a Crazy Man

November 24th, 2008 | preacher | Uncategorized

I had a great time this last Saturday. I am sure that the rest of you had to put up with the ramblings of a crazy man. I do hope that it was beneficial. Sorry we missed some of you, but we plan to get together again on Saturday January 31st at 8 a.m. at FBC Donelson.

For this next meeting we are going to practice outlining a text. The text that has been chosen is – Hebrews 12:1-17. Look through Dr. York’s book and see how he does his outlines. Then, through it all out and attempt your own outline. Remember that the purpose is to strive to figure out what the author of the text is saying. On January 31st we will each work through our outlines and then strive to compile it all into one workable outline.

Look forward to seeing you all at 8:30 a.m., January 31st at FBC Donelson.

Your servant,
Bro. Jim

Preaching! It is what we do…

August 4th, 2008 | preacher | Base Info

It is Sunday morning.  The week has been frayed by many needs and ministries.  But now it is time for you to stand to the platform and say, “Thus says the Lord!” For the last thirty years this moment has been a water and oil mix of fear and joy.

Preaching is what we do as preachers.  Yes, we must do other things also, determined by our location and church. But no matter what else is expected of us the moment of the sermon comes at least once a week. For me this moment comes Sunday morning, Sunday night, with Bible teaching on Wednesday night.  That is at least one-hundred sermons a year; taking out a few weeks of vacation.

But when do we as preachers spend time training ourselves in the matter of preaching? This first “Preachers On Preaching” conference will be a catalytic event to focus on the need of equipping the Bible preacher with the resources to engage in the art of preaching. This is not a come-hear event but a how-to event.

Look at the “Save This Date” page for all the base information.

I look forward to meeting you all at First Baptist Church Donelson for the first “Preachers On Preaching” conference.

Bro. Jim Cross
